New technology may increase identity theft
Saturday, October 01, 2005In a recent article at news.com I read that experts are just now saying that new technologies may be increasing identity theft. That sounds oddly familiar to an article I wrote here more than half a year ago. According to this article which is republished from Reuters, new technologies may be making it easier for cyber criminals to steal your identity. I have to say, as I already have in my previous articles, that I whole heartedly agree. Too much effort is being spent on trying to come up with security measures, ie. software and such, and not enough on educating the general public. The main way identity theft criminals gain their information is by tricking individuals into giving them the data that is necessary for the identity thief to assume the unsuspeciting individuals identity. If more people kept their information private and secure there would be far fewer identity theft cases.
According to the article on news.com individuals dependence on technology has reduced their vigilience in protecting their data. I'm not sure that I agree with this 100%. I think most technology users, and this may include you and if it does do not feel bad, just simply do not understand how the technology works and what information is safe and what information is not. In the coming weeks I will be writing some articles on different computer and internet technologies and how they relate to identity theft and how you can help secure your valuable identity information from being stolen.
